Community Fundraising Event This Saturday at the Old Christ Church – Help Preserve a Local Landmark

This Saturday, 12th April, the local community is invited to attend a special fundraising event taking place from 10:00am to 1:00pm, with a modest entry fee of just 50p. Held at one of the area’s most cherished venues, the event aims to raise vital funds to help maintain and preserve this beautiful Grade II listed church*, which continues to serve as a venue for local gatherings and events.

Recent months have brought a number of financial challenges. Alongside rising utility bills, significant repairs were required on the South wall, which had suffered from weather erosion and general wear and tear—resulting in a costly £2,500 bill, taken directly from the church’s own limited funds.

On a more positive note, the corner wall at Waterloo Road and Alexander Road, which was severely damaged in a car accident last July, has now been fully restored. Thanks to the driver’s insurance, the cost of this repair was covered, and local stonemasons have done a fantastic job. In time, the new stonework is expected to blend in naturally with the rest of the wall, aided by the weather and the familiar patina of the docks' surroundings.

Yet the work is far from over. The church still faces a long list of repairs, from the practical—like changing light bulbs to more eco-friendly alternatives—to the complex, where conservation-grade materials and expert trades are required due to the building’s listed status.

Despite these ongoing costs, organisers are committed to keeping entrance fees, table tariffs, and hire charges as low as possible, ensuring the venue remains welcoming and accessible to all. That said, donations are always appreciated, and every contribution helps ensure this treasured building continues to thrive for future generations.

The community is encouraged to come along on Saturday to show their support, enjoy the event, and play a part in preserving an important piece of local heritage.
